In 1993 it was determined by Paul Frieman and Wes Shelberg that this summit is higher than the usually accepted Split Mountain location to the southeast. They used a surveyor's sight level and barometric altimeters to make this determination, finding out that the USGS topographic map is in error. This summit therefore deserves to be the San Diego Peaks Section peak.
