The unnamed peak between the Piute Pass Trail and Wonder Lakes was dedicated to George R. Davis, a USGS topographer who explored, climbed and named many landmarks in the High Sierra at beginning of the 20th century.

In 2014, the informal name was changed to "Mount Thoreau" by wilderness enthusiasts along with devotees of Henry David Thoreau to honor the great 19th century American author and his legacy.

The USGS Board on Geographic Names has not accepted either of these proposals.
