| This huge flat mountain is an old seabed where with time the sedimentary rock eroded away in all directions (especially towards the Petit Jean River and left steep cliffs and a large mesa called Petit Jean Mountain. This is not the only mountain in the state named "Petit Jean" but this is the one that the state park is named after. The actual highpoint of the large flat table mountain is the county highpoint to the NE at the end of Davies Lane over 1100 feet, but that is on private land. This subpeak or hill on the table is bound by the significant erosive forces of Cedar Creek to the south, and Petit Jean River to the north leaving this rectangular flat mountian top 600 hundred to 700 feet above the valley.
This is the highpoint within the public lands of Petit Jean State Park and is thus, the state park HP. Noteworthy is that there is another public land on the table top to the far Eastern side of the mountain where Petit Jean is burried. This tiny area is also part of the state lands and the state park system but is far removed from the rest of the state park. The surveyed elevation of this subpeak is slightly higher than the Observation Point Peak within the mainbody of the state park. It will be enterred as a separate HP subpeak on the far side of the mountain. The saddle between this subpeak-hill and the higher true highpoint on private property is just NE at 940 feet. |
