It was once necessary to go over Unnecessary Mountain enroute to climb the Lions, hence the name. The early climbers begrudged the fact that an 'unnecessary' mountain had to be climbed en route to the desired summits of the Lions.
Unnecessary Mountain has 3 summits. The southern is the lowest. The middle is a bit higher than the original Unnecessary Mountain on the old Lions Trail to the North.
The Howe Sound Crest trail now goes around the flank of Unnecessary Mountain on the east side. The Howe Sound Crest trail in this vicinity is a subalpine ramble with extensive views across Howe Sound to the Tetrahedron Plateau. The mountain may also be reached directly from Lions Bay via a steep Unnecessary Mountain Trail (access to this trail is from the gated road leading to the Harvey Creek water reservoir.)
