The name "Ripinsky" seems more common on the signs and maps in Haines, despite "Ripinski" being the name on the topographic map.
This is a popular peak with a good network of maintained hiking trails. Views of Haines and the surrounding jagged peaks are spectacular on a clear day. The Ridge Trail from the Skyline trailhead is the most moderate and well-maintained trail to the summit, starting in deep forest and breaking out into the alpine at about 2200 feet. The Piedad Trail is unrelentingly steep but offers a shorter route, intersecting the Ridge Trail at 2000 feet, where it then leads to the summit.
Trail maps are posted at trailhead kiosks and are available at the Haines visitor center. |
