Description

This is the spring that forms the Catawba River in North Carolina. It is extremely remote and can be accessed only through a very steep descent from the gap along the ridge line just east of Evans Knob. The .3 mile descent and corresponding ascent to the gap took me over an hour. I wonder how many folks have visited this spot where a gurgling spring gives birth to one of the most important rivers in the Carolinas. Do not attempt this from a climb from Catawba falls below. The thorns and rhododendron are extremely thick and literally impassable in places.
