Gordon MacLeodJuly 26, 1924 - Witchita Falls, Texas / November 14, 2019 - Simi Valley, CAGordon MacLeod was a major force in the climbing and peakbagging communities in California for many decades of his long life. Deeply involved in the Sierra Club, he climbed hundreds of peaks in the Sierra Nevada and the US Southwest. Many remote summits still have registers placed by Gordon and his companion Barbara Lilley.
Paraphrased from the Sierra Club Website::
A former chair of the Desert Peaks Section and past vice chair of the Sierra Peaks Section, Gordon emerged as a leader in the 1960s and quickly exhibited remarkable skills in trip planning and execution. An engineer, Gordon expertly converted information taken from maps and emerging peak guides into successful trips in both the Sierra and desert. Rather than repeating climbs he'd already made, most of his trips were new experiences, which demanded exceptional leadership skills. After finishing the SPS, DPS and HPS lists, Gordon shifted much of his emphasis to other high points in the Southwest and possessed a heralded range of climbs in that region. He willingly imparted information gained from those independent explorations to today's leaders, thereby continuing to contribute to the Angeles Chapter's outings program. |
