David RobertsMay 29, 1943 - Denver, CO / August 20, 2021 - Boston, MADavid Roberts was both a pioneering climber and a well-known author of many acclaimed books.
As a climber, he will always be linked to his exploits in Alaska on steep, unclimbed terrain between 1963 and 1974. His list of impressive Alaska first ascents is arguably second to none. For a decade, he would carefully scour maps, photographs, and accounts for virgin big walls and ridges in places like the Alaska Range and Brooks Range, and then organize a major expedition to explore and climb in his chosen area.
Many of Roberts's books have been about mountaineering, but he has explored other subjects in other works. The climb list on this site was compiled from his autobiography, On the Ridge between Life and Death (Simon and Schuster, 2006). |
