Ascent Trip Report

The days adventure was to scramble harder faces of Observatory Rock but on the way we saw this small rocky peak and noticed it was a USGS feature. We decided to run up it. There was some small rock to scramble on the broad slope up to the peak and some at the top but mostly class 2 to very easy 3. But on the backside of the peak has some fun rock to climb. We parked near edge of the dirt road CR36 and jogged upslope till we started to see some rock where we could get some minor scrambles in. These were class 2+ mostly. After topping out, we hiked down the backside (south slopes) and found lot of interesting and fun bouldering opportunities. We found a perfect place for Dan to try what would be about a ten foot climb of class 5.5 to 5.6 but it was so low to the ground it would be some bouldering classification that is equivalent. Then we scrambled up and down several formations of class 3+ for fun and found a large rock with a high pitched sound. I investigated and found a rock crack with about 20 small bats in it. We then scrambled down about 20 feet below the formation and found huge piles of guano. Funny as we continued to practice rock-climbing/boudering in the area we kept finding more and more piles of guano. Apparently these large and interesting rock formations on the south side of the small peak house a large bat population. Fun little easy quick investigation with some surprises.
