Ascent Trip ReportI slept in my car at a pulloff just past the Deer Cove Trailhead, getting a surprisingly restful five hours of sleep. I started up the Copper Creek trail from Road's End shortly after 5:00am. There was a bit of cloud cover to the south and east, which was not threatening at the time but made me slightly nervous, maybe helping to push me up the steep trail climb. I stopped several times to take photos of the wildflowers, and I reached an empty campsite at the top of the climb just before 8:30am. Here I went off-trail towards Grouse Lake, following the 9,900ft contour pretty closely and staying high above the meadow, which was easy goings. I went up a grassy ramp behind Grouse Lake which led to a large granite field. From there I boulder hopped my way to the base of the west face of Goat Mountain, and I ascended the sand slopes and more boulders, which proved pretty tiring at this point of the hike. I reached the summit a couple minutes after 11:00am. Views were incredible in all directions, with Whitney being visible to the south. I descended to Grouse Lake and stopped to filter water and eat lunch. At this point the clouds were really taking form, and I descended as quickly as I could. Thunder roared for about an hour, but luckily it only sprinkled on the trail. I would later find out that the storms started the Georges Fire near Whitney Portal right around this time. By the time I reached the final switchbacks the sky was mostly blue again, but I was thankful that the storms cooled the area at the low elevations, even if only slightly. I reached the trailhead around 4:15pm, and I was back home in the bay at 10:30pm.
Stats: 5h57m up, 30m at summit, 4h39m down, 21.8 miles, ~7,200ft gained.
