Ascent Trip Report

I had done the loop around Sawtooth years ago but came back for the summit 20-some years later. Started from the Timpanogas Lake TH at a little after 6am, and hiked up to the clouds of mosquitos rolling off Indigo Lake, then escaped them again by climbing up to Windy Pass on a good trail, then turning right/west to the high point of the Sawtooth Trail. A double stump marks a well-trod climbers path NE up the ridge. There is a bit of loose sand, then gravel-sized rubble on top of a harder layer (which did not seem too slippery in spite of appearances - or maybe I was just stepping easy) before some easy class 3 scrambling around a couple of gendarmes and then picking a short way up to the summit. It is an interesting summit with rock fingers down the ridge, and impressive dropoffs on the N & S faces - to Indigo Lake on the north - and great views Sisters to McLoughlin, with especially good views of Thielsen, Bailey, Diamond, & other nearby peaks. Onward to Cowhorn.
