Ascent Trip Report

From the junction of US 89A and AZ 389 in Fredonia, AZ, drive west on 389 about 15 miles. (Fredonia is a short distance south of Kanab, UT.) Follow the brown signs a quarter mile north and turn west into Pipe Spring National Monument, parking at the visitor's center. From here a paved trail goes north toward three buildings. The largest of these, in the middle, is Winsor Castle. Pass to the left (west) of this building ad behind it you will find the Ridge Trail, which is a half mile loop trail. I hiked this trail in a clockwise direction, reaching the point shown on Andy Martin's photograph on this site. From here I worked my way north along the west fence. The highest ground appeared to be near the fence. At the northwest corner, the fence does not make a 90-degree turn. Rather, it makes two 135-degree turns, with a stretch of fence about three feet long joining the west and north fence lines. Beyond this fence, about where the fence post would be if the fence line made a more traditional 90-degree corner, was a bench mark resting in a pipe. I did not cross the fence but I was able to reach through and put my hand on the BM. I did not notice if anything was written on the BM. From here I followed the trail back to the buildings, and then to the visitor's center.

At the junction of the approach road with AZ389 there is a relatively new convenience store. This store was clean and spacious, and I was glad to buy a quart of cold lemonade after my hike in the July Arizona sun. This is also a good place to get gas. It was 30 cents a gallon cheaper than gas 15 miles west in Fredonia. This is because it is located on the Kaibab Paiute Reservation, and they don't have to pay state taxes.

I thank Andy Martin for his trip report and photograph.
