Ascent Trip ReportAfter coming down from Black Butte, I headed for Winnemucca Lake, dodging dozens of hikers and some irritating off-leash dogs on the trail. From the lake, it was an enjoyable cross country hike to the base of the peak. (Someone has flagged a route through this area, possibly for a future trail.) The final ascent was steep and loose; my descent line slightly to the west offered easier conditions.
Once on the summit, I spent a few moments contemplating how each raindrop falling on this triple divide point has a choice whether to flow into the Sacramento, the San Joaquin or the Carson River drainages. Ruminations completed, I hiked the short distance over to Peak 9842, where Brad Dozier had left a summit register last October. Unfortunately, the register was damp and had begun to mold. I let it dry out in the sun while I ate a second lunch, then signed in and placed the register in a plastic bag before slipping it back into its green canister. A refreshing dip in the bracing water of Lake 9120- was a highlight of the descent.
I’ve never liked the name given to this peak. Until recently, I assumed it was bogus and made-up, not unlike the questionable “Eagle Lake Buttress” in Desolation Wilderness. In my opinion, this peak would be better named “Round Top-East Ridge TDP."
