Ascent Trip ReportA decent hike, though the trail takes its time actually getting to the summit; the maintained trails almost completely circumnavigate the summit area without actually taking you there. Just cut up the slope off-trail once you reach the saddle offering your first views into the Teton Wilderness. The views from the old fire lookout are truly amazing- the Teton Range looks stunning from this northern angle, with Jackson Lake stealing the spotlight and the north faces of the peaks still covered in snow. Additionally, you can see all of the Teton Wilderness including Younts Peak, and all of Yellowstone Park. Pilot Peak is distinctly visible to the north with the Beartooths beyond. You can see Mount Jefferson by Island Park as well as the Madison, Gallatin, Beartooth, Absaroka, Wind River, Gros Ventre, and Snake River ranges. While the mountaineering potential on this peak is about as low as you can get, the views on this summit are honestly some of the most expansive in the entire Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. |
