Ascent Trip ReportI approached the Le Flore County highpoints eastbound on the Talimena Skyway, intending to try the two western spots to see if the bushwhacks would be possible in summer. At the turn-off for the aviation beacon, before I got out of the car, I was confronted by a large brown bear blocking the road. It eventually ambled off north into the bush, but I thought it unwise to hike up the road past the bear and possibly meet it again on the descent.
So I decided that Le Flore County could wait, and I did not make a serious attempt at the middle and eastern points. I did scramble up the road embankment next to the middle spots just to scout it out and I saw what I think was the highest rock, but it was guarded by a thicket of briars that is almost certainly snake-infested, and I didn't have on boots, so I didn't go further. The two eastern spots are right by the road but in thick trees that make it hard to be sure you've found the highest ground.
If I return, it will be in winter or early spring.
