Ascent Trip ReportThe roads here can be confusing, so I attached a GPS track of my descent. Set your GPS for Gladstone Forest Road, Jessieville, Arkansas. The roads are mostly unsigned and unnumbered, but if you can find the way they are good all the way to the top. There are several roads on Google Maps and Gaia GPS that are not shown on the USGS topo. This is National Forest Service land, so your best map overlay here is the FSTopo on ListsofJohn.
From Hwy 7, follow Gladstone Forest Road (signed FR 11) westbound past one Y intersection and then turn left at the second Y, which is called Hampo Road on some maps. This crosses the North Fork of the Ouachita River on a concrete ford (dry when we crossed) and intersects with Northfork Creek Road (signed FR 779). After a short distance west, this road forks and you should follow the left fork (uphill and south) on FR J60 (unsigned and listed as Brushy Mountain Road on some maps). Around spot elevation 1290, take the right fork, ignoring a newer and wider road to the left. Continue up to the ridgeline to a T intersection at spot elevation 1600, where you turn right (west). The road crosses Blue Ouachita Mountain just south of its peak and then crosses a gap before climbing Ouachita Pinnacle. We found two reference markers (one of them inside the fence on the foundation of the old lookout tower) and triangulated them to a spot right behind where I parked the car on the summit. I scuffed off some gravel and found the worn but intact Ouachita BM. If I'd known where it was, I could have Martinized it.
Nice view down the power-line cut, but otherwise the summit clearing is surrounded by trees.
