Ascent Trip Report

Music Mountain is also known as West Mountain (West is the name of the benchmark) and is the highest point in the Hot Springs National Park. The trail is labeled as the Sunset Trail or West Mountain Trail on different maps. From Blacksnake Road NW of the town of Hot Springs, the trail climbs steadily but easily for almost a mile, cresting a couple of hundred yards south of the summit. It's easy to go the rest of the way through the woods, but if you continue on the trail another 25 yards you'll see a grassy path on the left that leads to the summit. We found BM West and two reference marks.

Somewhere along this hike I evidently wandered into a nest of chiggers or something similar. I didn't notice until later in the day, but in a few hours my legs broke out in welts that itched relentlessly for several days while I was at the Highpointers AR18 convention. Long pants were no defense against them. If you're hiking this trail in early summer, be forewarned.
