Ascent Trip Report

This was a revisit to Cannon to try out the Hi-Cannon Trail. I found that all routes up Cannon are comparable in difficulty and none of them are easy. The bottom section of Hi-Cannon seems unnecessarily rough to me - the Lonesome Lake Trail/Dodge Cutoff is a much nicer option. The upper half of Hi-Cannon is still very steep and difficult, but enjoyable. There are plenty of outlooks across the notch, to the south, and also down to Lonesome Lake. I found the ladder on the trail was in good condition. The final section of this route is a long, flat walk across the crest of Cannon. The summit was as usual, very touristy but still spectacular. I made a loop of this trip by descending on the Kinsman Ridge Trail/Lonesome Lake Trail combination. The section of the Kinsman Ridge Trail coming down off of Cannon is probably the most difficult trail on this mountain. Extreme grades with massive boulders and tree roots are how it is.
