Ascent Trip Report

Chris Gilsdorfs report is spot on. The Gate at the State Game Lands off Archibald Mountain Road is closed from June 1st to April 20 something...sorry didn't catch the exact date and it likely moves year to year. But you want to probably do this hike in the fall/winter/spring. The bushwhack is much easier now that they clear cut a swath across the mountain, but it would be even better when the brush is dead and the leaves are down.

Download/Follow the GPS track uploaded by Jean Andre Laverdure with one exception (see bellow). Park at the State Game Land parking if the gate is shut. Take the gated road (right fork, ungated, just goes to a communications tower). When you get to the clearcut for the powerlines, look across the cut and a bit west for another gate. Take this road north for about half a mile, looking out for the new clearcut on the right. Hike east along the clearcut, and here is where you divert from Jean's useful GPS track. When you get to the stone cairn, keep going along the swath, past the crest and start going down hill a bit. You will see a large boulder. Keep an eye left, look for a game trail, it is actually very close to where Jean posted the geocache waypoint. I didn't linger to find it (thegreatexplorer was waiting in the car), but the geocachers left a manway of sorts. Follow the game paths through waist deep and sometimes neck deep laurel, interspersed with small clearings. There is a clearing with a toppled cairn, which could have been the high point. I fought the brush for half an hour or so, touched everything as high as I could find, and called it good.
