Ascent Trip Report

Mount Washington has about a hundred different ways up it, and all of them require some quantity of sketchy scrambling.

The climber's trail is very clear for the first mile or so of climbing, spitting you out into a high basin at 4800 feet. From there I headed straight uphill, over quickly melting snowfields and a series of low Class 3 ledges, gaining the ridge connecting to Mount Ellinor around 5600 feet. An attempt to traverse the east face of the ridge ended when it cliffed out, so I retreated and made my way straight up and over. This was hard Class 3 with some exposure, right at the upper edge of what I feel comfortable soloing, but it got me to the saddle at 5800 where I noted the memorial to a fallen climber. The summit section is easy and fairly unexposed, and I was quickly enjoying magnificent views from the top.

On the return, I decided the basin below looked navigable, so I descended directly rather than try to retrace my path. This was mostly a correct move, though I ran into some sketchy business around 5600 feet at the head of a large snowfield - the route steepened considerably, and a large moat made it difficult to transition out onto the snow. Everything went okay though, and once on the snow it was easy going the remainder of the way.
