Ascent Trip Report

We accessed Boundary Peak from Pittsburg, which seemed like a fine place to cross the border until we found out that the crossing does not open until 8AM, leaving us watching time pass for an hour until the gate opened. Once in Quebec, we were amazed at the scenery. As you round the corner from the border crossing, you leave the emptiness of Pittsburg behind and immediately go down a hill with spectacular mountain views across farmland. Driving to Mont Gosford Park was very easy with Google Maps; the road to the park entrance was clearly marked with signs for Mont Gosford. It is not so clear where you actually enter the park. We discovered you must enter the visitor center to pay, and the road is right next to the building. The visitor center does have a map of the park that clearly shows Boundary Peak and how to get to it. We got clear directions from the attendant. The park roads did not meet my expectations; they were absolutely miserable to drive. They were full of rocks and huge ruts. One bridge on the way, although extremely solid, would most definitely scrape the bottom of a low-clearance vehicle getting on and off it. The side road to the trailhead, Chemin de la Grive, was in even worse shape. Depending on how you feel about the "main" park road, you may want to find a spot to park at the bottom and just walk the 0.8 miles on this road. We parked at a spot halfway up.

When we reached the gravel pit at the end of the road, the ATV trail was pretty easy to locate; it's the rightmost path at the far end of the clearing. At the beginning of it, there is some sort of large wooden frame on the left side. It quickly drops to cross a brook and turns left. We missed the left turn but still picked it up immediately. The 0.9 miles up the ATV trail starts out seeming way too steep even for an ATV. There is a lot of loose rock that doesn't make for good footing. Most of the climbing is done in the first half, so once you hit 3400' or so, it is a nice easy walk out to the border cut. We noticed that most of the ATV traffic seems to turn left at the border and so forms a nice walking path. When we first turned the corner and the peak came into view, it looked extremely far away, but we reached it in about 40 minutes. The extra ascents and descents along the boundary cut also look way bigger than they actually are. There is a significant blowdown area in the first flat area along the path. Wide views open back into Canada while climbing the peak. It was very clear on our climb, and we could see all the way to the Presidential Range back in NH. The views down the cut to the southwest from the peak are much stronger than the other direction. There is a cairn on the US side of the boundary cut at the summit. At this point, a herd path leads to the right down to the summit register and an excellent views over the trees to some of the Rangeley High Peaks and many of the other Hundred Highest peaks. We enjoyed the views for a few minutes before heading back down; our total hiking time was about 2.5 hours and we were able to drive across to Maine later that afternoon to collect Chain of Ponds Snow.
