Ascent Trip Report

Started out from the Pinnacle Rd trailhead. There are two marked DEC trails there. The one to take is the blue-blazed trail that appears to go straight ahead from the parking lot. The red-blazed trail goes to Chase Lake; do not take.

The first two miles is well marked and easy to follow on the blue DEC foot trail. You’ll see a large marsh on the left after about a mile and a half. After you pass the marsh and cross over its inlet stream, this is the place to begin your bushwhack by veering left.

At first the slope is manageable, but after a couple tenths of a mile it starts to get challenging, and there are two or three places along the way where it is at least a 35 or 40 percent grade. There were also a couple of steep rock faces, but they were easy to navigate around, as Alan Bernier denoted in his 2017 TR.

I used the app on my phone for Pigeon Mountain to help guide us through the bushwhack to the summit. Right at the place where AllTrails indicates the summit ‘X’ is a tree with a pink ribbon tied around it. That’s your spot.

The descent took longer than expected, mainly due to the steepness in the first half mile. After that it was pretty easy going. Good luck trying to descend on the same route you took up. It won’t happen. ;)

Sign at the Pinnacle Road trailhead. To be sure, the red and yellow trails are NOT the ones to take to the Pigeon Mountain summit. Take the blue trail that goes toward County Line Lake (2018-06-15). Photo by Todd Jennings.
