Ascent Trip ReportI was planning to climb on Sunday. However, Saturday was looking perfect with no breeze and clear skies. I opted to give it a shot a day early. The thought was that even if I couldn't make it up and back before dark, it was just a hike on a 4WD road and I could navigate in the dark.
The drive up was not horrible, but the 4WD vehicle was certainly a must. Some snowy/icy spots were a bit rough. In California you have to wrap your vehicle to prevent marmots from climbing under the hood and chewing up cables to get to the antifreeze. This took about an hour with a large tarp, string, and tape.
I hit the trail at 12:14pm. It was an easy hike up a 4WD road. Interesting to walk through the Barcroft Research Station.
At about 1000ft and a mile from the summit, snow was starting to get bad with relatively high wind. After much deliberation I decided it was best to turn back. I nearly lost the road a few times due to the quick snow cover and near white out conditions. After hiking 6 miles back in the storm I was so happy to see the vehicle.
By the time I was getting back, the snow was much calmer. I also saw a HUGE jackrabbit. It was about the size of Kathryn and Joel's dog Luna. Big ears and all. About 10ft away. Very cool to see.
Even without the summit, I was glad I made the attempt. I had to drive back down same day or the vehicle would have been stuck high on the mountain with the snow and an overnight freeze. The road was much rougher coming down after the snow, but I made it. Also helped a guy with a flat.
I was glad I didn't get stuck risking an overnight bivy (though I carried the gear for it just in case) or abandoning the vehicle and hiking 20mi back down. Decided to drive all the way back to Agoura Hills and get a bed for the night.
I'll be back with more respect on my next attempt on White Mountain.
