Ascent Trip ReportThis one is waaay out there. After spending the night at a friends cabin in Fruitland Idecided this was a good way to avoid the Memorial day crowds. I was very impressed with the upper levels of the Tavaputs plateau region. Quality aspen stands and very wild feeling. I mountain biked from near Wilcox point after hiding my car a bit should I encounter others as I had no permit. This is a very remote area and I figured on a bike if I heard a motor coming I would just jump into the brush and hide. I only ended up seeing an abundance of wildlfe. 3 pronghorn, 4 turkeys, 5 deer, 20+ wild horses, 2 very large buffalo, 5 elk, and a close encounter with a black bear that I ended up scaring more than he scared me. No register on the summit, o yourself a favor and head the the Roan peaks at the end, fantastic views over Moab. I biked along the Mormon ridge road an additional 7ish miles for fun and this is actually where I saw much of the wildlife. I also had an idea for a east -west bikepacking traverse of Utah that could use the rim of the Tavaputs, but I will definitely be asking the tribe fro permission for that. I bet their primary reason for exclusion is to protect from poaching and overexploitation. I have mostly seen the tribes being open to primitive recreation by capable people that are not going to trash their lands.
