Ascent Trip ReportDay hike with Pat and Leo from the Art Loeb Trailhead at the access road off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Summited Black Balsam Knob, continued to Tennent Mountain, followed the Art Loeb Trail into Shining Rock Wilderness where we summited Grassy Cove Top and then followed the Old Butt Trail to Shining Rock. We then doubled back the way we came.
Once we passed through Flower Gap and Flower Knob, we reached a junction where the trail splits 3 directions. We stayed straight and picked up the Old Butt Trail. We knew we were headed in the right direction once we started seeing white quartz. The intertwining trails near the summit made finding the actual summit a bit complicated, but we were able to locate the highest point which is highlighted by a large rock which looks like it’s speckled with white snow.
