Ascent Trip ReportMica stands less than 10 miles from my home and climbing it became a goal of mine during college. Toward the end of my 2017 Summer Break, my Dad finally agreed to join me for an ascent (He had previously taken the climb as a training hike for Philmont Scout Ranch, and was familiar with the route). We started off from Liberty Lake Regional Park around 6:00 AM and made our way through the park, eventually leaving the official trails and moving up toward the marked viewpoint, then pushing further along the access trail to the summit. We arrived at the summit around 10:30 AM and stopped for a half hour to eat lunch before beginning our descent. We arrived back at the car around 2:00 PM and headed back into Liberty Lake to grab a second, more filling lunch.
We saw extensive wildlife on the hike, including a moose near the summit. Our route was in good condition and we picked a good day for a hike, since it was clear but not too hot (something of an anomaly in early-August). The only downside was dust and smoke, which were not so bad as to make breathing an issue on the hike but did obscure the view from the summit.
This hike was my first experience climbing more than 2000 feet in any hike and my first time walking / hiking more than 8 miles in one continuous trip. With 3100 feet of elevation gain and around 14 miles round-trip, this ascent solidly broke both records.
