Ascent Trip Report

From Lockwood Valley Road turned south on Mutau Road (7N03), driving past Piano Box Road, 7N03A (Pine Spring Campground) and Fishbowl Trailhead, until crossing Piru Creek. At that point turned right at the fork onto 7N03B until reaching Thorn Meadows Campground at the road end. There were a few more stream crossings, so best to drive a high clearance 4x4.

After parking at the campground followed the signed Thorn Mountain Trail, which was well maintained and easy to follow. For the first mile, the trail went up a shallow canyon, well shaded with trees. From there, the trail started its relentless ascent up over numerous switchbacks until finally gaining the ridge. From the top of the ridge, the lookout tower was a short walk to the west. The tower and cabin were still standing and the register was in a box chained to the leg of the tower. Enjoyed exploring the tower and surrounding area and then headed back along the same trail to the campground.
