Ascent Trip Report

From the trailhead, a lot of very gradual uphill. I was a little concerned that it was going to be like this for the entire hike, but as I got further in, the trail kept getting wetter and wetter. Nothing like a little (or ankle deep) mud to spice up a hike, but it didn't end there. There were parts of the trail with pretty substantial standing water, some areas so deep that frogs had laid their eggs. Trail was also pretty gnarly with a decent amount of blowdowns.

Around 3000 feet I transitioned from the marked snowmobile trail to the herd path to the summit. The herd path is extremely easy to follow, and it even looked like there had once been blazes on the trees. It was very steep, going straight up the mountain, but it was relatively short. Took a detour to Hurricane Ledge and enjoyed some views of the Devil's Path. Going down, I also stopped at a viewpoint overlooking the Blackhead Range. Hike out was pretty uneventful, although I was experiencing some knee pain, so it was rather slow going. Overall, 8.6 miles with 2595 feet of elevation gain at 1.8mph.
