Ascent Trip Report

After the slogfest of climbing Gilbert two days prior, I took a break day the previous day to both physically and mentally prepare myself for what I very much expected to be a repeat on Dade. Luckily, I turned out to be very wrong. On my off day I scouted out Rock Creek Road. The Forest Service website claimed that it would open the whole way to Mosquito Flat on Friday, but nonetheless, it was only open to the pack station. The road opened the day after my climb.

I left my motel in Mammoth, arrived at the Rock Creek Pack Station, and started hiking up the road at 4:45am. I only needed my headlamp for about the first half hour. The trail had significant snow cover in parts, but to my delight, I postholed only a handful of times the entire hike. Right before starting the cross-country portion of the route past Long Lake, I passed two skiers that were also headed for the hourglass. I reached Treasure Lakes around 6:30am, cruised through and started up the hourglass. I strapped on my crampons about halfway up as the slope steepened. I reached the top of the ridge around 7:45am and summited just after 8:30am after making my way up the gentle snow slope. The summit was socked in by low clouds, and I could only see down the southeast ridge and to the col between Dade and Abbot, which looked particularly menacing. I only stayed at the summit about ten minutes, not looking very hard for a summit register, glissading down the couloir (I ran into the skiers again as they topped out at the couloir), and reaching my car at 11:12am. By the time I was walking out, the clouds had lifted somewhat, giving me a hard-earned view of the crest. I was back at my apartment in the Bay just after 5:30pm.

Stats: 3h47m up, 10m at summit, 2h31m down, 14.0 miles, ~3,700ft gained.
