Ascent Trip ReportHaving driven to Québec on Friday evening for a birthday party, I spent the night at Laurent's place. I woke up around 07:00 and was on the road 15 minutes later. The plan was to explore the roads in réserve faunique des Laurentides. I had seen a few that were plowed all winter and maybe it would be possible to get away from HWY 175 early this spring. When I reached RTE 16 just south of l'Étape, I had to go about a kilometer on it before I encountered logging machines. The surface was terribly damaged and I soon realized I had to turn back.
I didn't have much more hope for RTE 163 so I decided I'd drive up north to another MRC high point. In l'Étape, I did some quick and dirty research on my phone and took the road again. After a long drive, I reached lac des Îlets and started looking for the correct junction. It wasn't hidden so I was able to turn right on chemin du lac du Bois Joli, climbing slightly. At the bend near the lake I stumbled into a large washout followed by a big ice patch. I did a 8-point turn on the super narrow road and backtracked to a fork where I parked.
After changing into my hiking gear, I took off heading east on the road. It was an easy hike and after a few minutes I reached the junction towards the aerial. There was still some snow and I had to put the snowshoes on. It wasn't great as the snow disappeared in many places. At some point I removed them again and lived with the occasional shallow postholing. When I reached the aerial, I saw it was very flat all around and tried to find the highest spot. I settled for a marshy patch behind the installation and marked it in the GPS.
I then backtracked downhill, getting my feet somewhat wet from the slushy snow, all the way to the road where I turned left and headed to my trailhead. It was a quite boring and uneventful hike. |
