Ascent Trip ReportI drove up to the south side of Mt Baker on Monday evening and reached snowline on FR 13 at sunset. Snowline is currently at the switchback at 2,400ft, about 4-5 miles from the trailhead. I realized my headlights had stopped working, so needed to adjust my schedule to be back in Seattle the next day well before dark.
I left the car and skinned 1.5 hours to the trailhead and bivied around 10:30pm. I started skinning up again at 2am following snowmobile tracks up to near Crag View. I switched to crampons here in icy parts and scrambled over the crag as the sun was rising.
I then skinned up the Squak Glacier to the Roman Wall and switched to crampons, while carrying my skis up. The snow would have actually been soft enough to ski up with ski crampons if I'd had them.
By 9:15am I was on the summit, and noticed two other tracks coming from the north side. I heard they summitted Sunday, and the snowline was 2 miles from the trailhead on the Heliotrope ridge side.
After rubbing and scraping off some stubborn glue stuck to my skis I began the amazing 8,400ft ski descent back to the car. I didn't see a single person all day.
