Ascent Trip Report

We really enjoyed our windy hike through the surreal Joshua Tree forest, finding many cool blooming plants, a full-curl Bighorn Sheep horn, and interesting rocks. One of the most bizarre things about this otherworldly trip, however, was the ubiquity of Mylar party balloons strewn on the bushes and cacti. We found like half a dozen balloons throughout the walk, most of which were Frozen-themed. Evidently a bunch of kids at LA-area birthday parties had heeded Princess Elsa's advice and "let it go", only for the balloons to blow eastward and pop, sending them crashing into the desert. We found more balloons a day or two later on San Gorgonio. Our packs were stuffed with shiny, crinkly trash by the time we got back to our cars at Ryan Campground. Alex found energy to run up Ryan Mountain in the afternoon, but he didn't report finding any more balloons.
