Ascent Trip Report

There are three 820-foot contour lines on Rock Mountain and all cover a fair amount of area. The easiest access is from a trailer home southeast of the summit of the NE spot where you are only .12 air miles from its highpoint. I asked permission from a lady in the trailer home and she was agreeable with me climbing, but she wanted me to get permission from her mother, who owns part of the mountain and lives across the road. The elderly lady was okay with me climbing as well, but her adult grandson saw me talking to her and he intervened with suspicion. He could not understand why anyone would want to climb Rock Mountain, except in the hunting season, and he figured I must have an ulterior motive. It took a few minutes before he allowed me to proceed. I bushwhacked the steep SE slope of Rock Mountain to the NE highpoint in 5 minutes where I encountered a very good ridgeline trail and a deer stand. There is no obvious summit, so all you can really do is hike the ridgeline trail. The center highpoint is .23 air miles away from here. I covered this distance in 5 minutes also. I had to cross a barbed wire fence enroute. The SW highpoint is just .17 air miles from this center highpoint and it is located in a pasture with grazing burros. I covered this distance in 3 minutes, but I felt uncomfortable because I could see a building southwest of this third highpoint and I worried since I did not have permission to be in this area after crossing the fence earlier. At this point I had covered .54 miles. I took my last victory photo and hurried back to the safety of the forest and then back to my car. My roundtrip distance was 1.07 miles which I covered in 35 minutes. There were no views from any of the three highpoint candidates.
