Ascent Trip ReportI usually don't climb unnamed county highpoints, but the Choctaw County highpoint is just 1.41 air miles from the McCool Lookout Tower and I decided to bag it next after reaching the lookout tower on the Attala County highpoint. The western access road to both the McCool Lookout Tower and the Choctaw County highpoint is posted with two small signs positioned in trees and read,"Posted LHC." There is a gate, but it was open and appeared to have not been in use for a long time. The dirt road leading to these highpoints is in good condition and it is a surprise to eventually reach a steep hill just .46 air miles from the McCool Lookout Tower where only a substantial 4-wheel drive vehicle and a daring driver could continue. I parked my 1991 Ford Festiva and hiked to the tower in less than 10 minutes where the Choctaw County highpoint is 1.41 air miles away from there, but unfortunately you cannot follow the road the entire distance. From the McCool Lookout Tower I continued following the road a short distance to a wide clear cut area for a future power line. At this spot the Choctaw County highpoint was 1.3 air miles to the north. Despite this area being clear cut, the going is quite rough with several steep sided ravines to descend and climb out of and quite a few muddy small creeks that might be impassible in rainy weather. It took me 1 hour and 4 minutes to reach the highpoint from my car. The entire highpoint area was clear cut and the ground was very disturbed, so the previous highpoint has likely been changed. With the forest removed you do get a good sense of what a remote area you are in, since you cannot see any roads or houses in any direction. It took me 1 hour and 3 minutes to hike back to my car. My roundtrip hiking distance was 4.3 miles. |
