Ascent Trip Report

Drove over to the little used parking area at Maymen's Flat after Loma Prieta and headed down to the peak. There was some sign about the park being closed, but we ignored it and didn't encounter anyone for the 5 minutes we were gone so it wasn't an issue.

Summit Road is public the entire length from Highway 17 to Mt. Madonna. About 20 years ago, the landowners got a bit overzealous and gated off the road. Later, they were sued and lost the case. The prosecutors were able to establish a history of use by bringing in witnesses who had walked and biked the road in the 1950s. They county ordered them to permanently open the gates, but unfortunately did not force them to take down the “No Trespassing” signs. This is why there are scary signs along the road, but you will never find the gates closed. Scott and I have personally driven this road many times without any issue, so maybe the landowners know they can’t stop anybody. In any case, drive the road and let those owners know nobody can keep us off our public lands!
