Ascent Trip ReportDO NOT FOLLOW MY TRACK
Aztec peak is in a surprisingly beautiful area. I was expecting more of the central Arizona scrub rather than substantial pine forests. However, definitely just drive to the top on this one and enjoy the expansive views.
I added this one at the last minute, since it seemed like I would have enough time to tag something else in addition to Browns and Pinal. However, I did almost no research on it other than figuring out how to drive there. I saw a track for a short hike via “Annie’s Way” and decided I’d do that.
It started off fine and quickly put out into meadows where the trail became indistinct. I could see the lookout tower just a few hundred feet above me and no more than a mile away. However, once across the meadows it became clear that this area had burned. The trail did become clear again and has seen some trail maintenance since then. There was even recent yellow flagging tied to the trees, but very quickly the tread disappeared. Shortly, thereafter the flagging disappeared too.
At this point I should have turned around, but I thought that there was still a trail through here that other people were using. Then even the faint use/game path disappeared. I did pop over to where I had the GPS track, and the old trail was visible but just as overgrown. Normally, this would just be a slight annoyance; however, the “trees” have these razor sharp thorns. You can’t just push through them, and this was all made so much worse as I was wearing running shorts. Between stubbornness and being far enough into the thicket, I just slowly made my way through. I got cut up pretty good. This was probably my second worst bushwhack (#1 involved a lot of poison oak). There was no doubt in my mind about taking the road back down.
