Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club Outing***
led by Mat Kelliher, Bill Simpson
While on the drive out Saturday morning, at about 5:15am, I pulled up alongside a couple of our participants at a traffic light in Hesperia, CA. While waiting for the light to turn green, we waved at each other just before another vehicle slammed into the back of their Lexus. Not much damage to their vehicle, nor to the other vehicle, but the driver of the offending car was lacking both a drivers license and insurance. So we had to call the police, and then wait around for about an hour and half for them to show up and finish up with their business. So we were about an hour or so late to the trailhead
Drove in on decent road to beyond the 4WD parking spot; once there we found one of our group stuck in loose rock/sand up to the frame of his vehicle, complete with several inches of air beneath his front wheels. We spent about an hour and a half digging it out and then thanks to a tow strap and a new-ish Toyota 4 Runner, driven by one of our group who was obviously wildly happy to put his new-ish vehicle to the test, were able to get him free.
We ascended the peak via its south and then southeast ridge. Good and steep, with great views all around us all the way up. We returned more or less the way we came up, but dropped down into the main ravine via a gully rather than continuing down the lower portion of that southern ridge.
After getting back out on pavement, Bill realized that his vehicle had been damaged, so he took off for home. The rest of us headed north to outside of Tecopa, CA for the DPS Chili Cookoff
