Ascent Trip Report

An ascent of West Gros Ventre Butte is a journey which skirts the wealthiest 'neighborhood' in Jackson, and likely the whole valley. I parked at the end of the public portion of Pratt Rd as per Benjamin Thomson's trip report- this ended up being an ideal place to start. I hiked up the road until the first switchback, where I left the road and headed cross-country straight for the summit. Distantly above and below me as I contoured my way to the summit slope were scattered 30-million-dollar mansions, none of which are visible from the roads us plebs usually drive on. By contouring most of the way north to the summit, I was able to stay well away from the houses. The views of the southern Teton range were fantiastic- this is the only place you can be that high up and that close to the mountains, and with bluebird skies today they looked amazing. After a series of ups and downs along my low contour, I finally reached the summit slope, where the bulk of the elevation gain awaited me. As this slope was south-facing, it was mostly snow free and the walking was easy. At the top I enjoyed the views while a flock of mountain bluebirds frolicked. After a while taking in the views and the sunshine, I headed back to the road, generally re-tracing my steps. I was glad to have climbed at this time of year, as I doubted many of the rich inhabitants of this hillside were actually in town during the off-season. Still, I did my best to be discreet as I passed by the houses out of principle. I really enjoyed this hike and was glad to make it up there!
