Ascent Trip Report

After climbing Pennybacker West Overlook, I saw a few folks climbing its taller counterpart to the east.

"Waaaaait, that's not on PB. That looks just as climbable as the last one. LET'S GO!"

Really, the toughest part of this one was waiting for the light to turn so I could cross Loop 360. After that, it was much the same set of options -- the obvious, direct, "rock ledge" trail to the right, and the (much!) less direct trail through the juniper woods to the left. It took me a half second to choose the harder trail. Seriously, we've suffered through enough junk bumps and road summits and liners, and been teased by too many mountains you can't climb because "you're out of town for a wedding, not for mountain climbing" and two actual hills in a row? Yes, please.

And sure, it's, what, 120 feet of gain? But come on. It's a climbable hill in Austin that's on public easement (or at least on land where the owner doesn't care that a zillion randos are climbing it every weekend with decent weather). Do it! And, well, of course, I did it. No issues, just a few high ledges to hoist oneself on, and soon enough, up to the flat, but high summit. Honestly, less of a view of Pennybacker from the tip-top here, but following the back trail along the ridge to the east leads you to some amazing views of the river, and I took that trail back down (about four times as long, but way gentler).

So all in all, a little harder than its sibling, the view is *slightly* less nice from the top, but the other overlooks more than make up for that.

Worth it? Heck yes.

Time for some road summits to round out the day.

Onward and upward!
