Ascent Trip Report

We planned to do El Sombroso from the Bald Peak parking lot. When we arrived at 2pm, we ran into some friends, and persuaded them to abandon their Umunhum hike in favor of this. But with a 2-yr old in a backpack, and another friend 6 months pregnant, our pace was only 40 minutes per mile. We weren’t sure about the gate situation after dark, so after 1,000’ of elevation loss, at the intersection of Barlow Road with Woods Trail, we abandoned the chase and went for dinner instead (Hi Pot in Cupertino - highly recommended!). A better approach with no elevation loss would be from the Jacques Ridge parking area. Another route, from Lexington Reservoir via Limekiln Trail, would give the bonus of Priest Rock. On the way out we noticed that the gates are pressure sensitive, so you can exit Sierra Azul Preserve after dark.
