Ascent Trip Report

With this being our second peak of the day, we hesitated to take the direct (steep) approach from the end of Yucca Loma as reported by Greg Gerlach and others and chose instead a longer, more gradual, and perhaps more scenic route.
From our park point adjacent to a couple water tanks near the end of Via Vista Road we followed a jeep trail up a canyon to the site of an old mine. Beyond this point a use trail continues along the canyon bottom before gradually disappearing below a saddle at an elevation of 4,160'. There are several secondary peaks on the north/south ridge that leads to Feldspar Benchmark from the saddle so we decided it would be a good idea to bypass these false summits in the hopes of minimizing any extra elevation gain. Our plan was fairly successful but there were a few ups and downs along the way, particularly when hiking around boulders and across a few side canyons. As luck would have it, the rain that had fallen earlier in the day during our ascent of Fairview Mountain held off until we returned to our vehicle.
