Ascent Trip Report

Took redline metro (trail 1) to the SE corner of Columbus Circle adjacent to the Trump Tower and hiked down into the park. My goal was to run/hike/climb my way through the rolling hills and relic glacial features until I found this remaining highpoint I had not completed in the area. All before dark which was rapidly approaching. The bummer was, as early spring the park had seeded most of the grounds and about 85% of the park was off limits to anyone unless they were on a trail, road or designated path. So a rolling hill beeline was not possible. I had countless times in my 1 mile journey (as the crow flies) where I had to hike around obstacles and fences. I ended up hiking or running down to every water feature I could find and then running up every rock out cropping I could find that was not fenced off. Fortunately, most rock features allowed hiking and climbing. Most rock features are 10 to 25 feet tall of class 1 or 2 but I did find a couple a faces where you could run up as a simple class 3 scramble, ridiculously short scrambles, but what the heck? you are in the middle of NYC for gosh who could can make this odd urban park into an interesting obstacle run if you string them all together. Fortunately the actual peak was not fenced off either.

In all I meandered through at least 6 arches, visited at least 20 rocky outcroppings, touched water's edge of at least 4 water bodies/reservoirs and explored probably 50% of central park and logged about 4 miles in. I made it back to the subway station where I started at 7:20 PM as it was getting dark. A more pleasant way to peakbag a trivial point and get a days exercise out of it.
