Ascent Trip Report

I hit West Onion Peak in about the best conditions possible and had a great time. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, the temperature was pleasant and the ocean breeze spectacular. However, the views from the summit are somewhat limited, because it is forested.

I parked at the gate for the logging road just south of Hug Point park. The land is clearly marked as private, but the timber company explicitly allows public recreational access. The road is basically a logging truck highway and very easy going though it gains aggressively until it starts a big traverse across West Onion. I walked my bike plenty, and it was still worth it.

The route leaves the more traveled logging road at a switchback and descents briefly. I very quickly encountered patches of snow and then hit the snow line, where I ditched my bike. The 4WD road that leads to the ridge south of the summit was hard to find, and I walked right past it. It might be easier without the snow though. Unfortunately, the snow was pretty soft and I had no flotation. It was slightly easier in the trees, so I took a more direct line uphill. My final path up the ridge to the summit was pretty bad. The snow was surprisingly deep and the rocks were wet from slush. At least there wasn’t any poison oak in the bushwhack.

The bike descent was easily the best part of the day.
