Ascent Trip ReportThanks for the suggestion from Spencer Crispe to approach this peak via Black Falls Road which bears left off Mountain Road in Montgomery Center (just before the Fuller covered bridge). In early March this road was squishy and rutted but beautiful just the same in the shadows of North Jay and Jay Peak. I parked near a sign for Black Falls Road Extension and walked up this road which turns to a trail in about .5.
I took a line (see GPX) somewhat east of the summit for a somewhat less steep approach, although the elevation gain was about 2000 feet in 2 miles. Nevertheless, this worked out well on snowshoes in packed snow and I had an easy time descending. There is a small glade near the summit with great views of North Jay Peak and Jay Peak. I did not find a canister but the spruce are nasty at the top.
Check out the village of Montgomery Center which is at the turn for Black Falls Road. There is a covered bridge, interesting 19th century architecture and impressive scenery. The general store in Montgomery Village (2 miles down the road) has everything.
