Ascent Trip Report

07:00 - Driving 302 through Bartlett admiring the full moon setting over the mountains to the west. Temp's are high 20's with the forecast for upper 30's for the day.
07:05 - Parked at the Sawyer River Road parking lot (the road is closed in the winter).
07:15 - Hit the trail (road) with Dan McKee. Microspikes + Gortex sneakers. Quickly passed a threesome skinning up and towing a sled with gear. They are headed to Carrigan.
07:55 - Right turn onto Signal Ridge trail. Very firm snow underfoot.
08:35 - Carrigan Notch trail/Nancy Pond trail intersection. Keep right on Nancy pond trail. There is 1 set of snowshoe prints on the trail from days before. No recent traffic.
09:00 - Reach "The Rock" which is just before the "V" on the tree indicating the bushwhack begin point. I hadn't been here before. We passed the "V" on the tree and continued on up the trail 1/8 mile before I realized we had passed it. We turned around and went back and found the tree with the "V". Changed from microspikes to hillsounds. There are no footprints ascending. Begin the bushwhack.
10:15 - Reached the scree field. Crossed it easily and picked up the "trail" on the other side.
10:40 - Summit. Signed the log book, grabbed a quick bite to eat and drink, and then began the descent. Near the summit, the climb is extremely steep. You don't realize how steep until you are descending. I found myself standing at a point looking down and I could even see the slope below me until ~100' below.
11:30 - Back on the Nancy Pond trail.
12:35 - Back at the Signal Ridge/Sawyer ridge intersection
13:15 - Back at the parking lot/car.
