Ascent Trip ReportA x-country visit to 4 areas ... 2.5 miles hiking, allow 2 hours including the in-between-driving.
We started the day with Bill Schuler's TR in hand with no intentions of entering a TR (we only add TRs where necessary). We had no problem following Bill for the 2 Northern AREAS 3 & 4 and we have nothing to add (except perhaps to say that the steel structure of the Tower is still here minus the cabin), however we couldn't follow his directions for the 2 Southern AREAS 1 & 2 - so this report gives our account of the visit. One must read Bill.
Bill zeroed his odo at the Graves/Marshall County Line on Hwy 58/80 and drove east. At "Mile Marker 5.6" he writes, "..... CR2606, Jackson School Road on the left. Oak Grove Church Road, Hwy 299 on the right (not Staples Road). Turn Right......". Well, we turned right (south) and couldn't find "the House with a lot of bird houses", in fact at his "Mile Marker 6.5" we had the Callowau County Line in front of us. ??????
Here is our account of the visit.
At Bill's "Mile Marker 5.6" we turned right on Hwy 299, .5 miles south turned left (eastbound) onto Magness Road, 1.5 miles east turned left on Oak Groves Church Road), .4 miles north turned left into the House driveway MB#676 (if coming from the north, its .7 miles from Hwy 402 - North of 402 is Slickback Road which is Bill's route to the northern areas).
Both Southern Areas are to the west of this house MB#676. I went to the house and found no one home, I decided to proceed and leave Rose to deal with the consequences.
Immediately north of the house is a very narrow E-W band of woods. I walked west on the south side for .3 miles to AREA 1, then another .4 miles west to AREA 2. A flat easy quick walk albeit a bit spongy in places.
Rose had a quiet/uneventful visit.
It's acknowledged that Bill's hiking directions are similar to mine. Also as I write this it came to me that the perhaps "the House with a lot of bird houses" is on this Oak Grove Church Road and not on 299???
"WE WERE WALTZING THAT NIGHT IN KENTUCKY
BENEATH THE BEAUTIFUL HARVEST MOON
AND I WAS A BOY THAT WAS LUCKY
BUT IT ALL ENDED TOO SOON
AS I SIT HERE ALONE IN THE MOONLIGHT
I SEE YOUR SMILING FACE
AND I LONG ONCE MORE FOR YOUR EMBRACE
IN THAT BEAUTIFUL KENTUCKY WALTZ." .............. song lyrics by bill monroe.
