Ascent Trip Report(My trip statistics include all of the travel to get the wilderness highpoint and Signal Peak. The ascent is purely for Cahto.)
Cahto was another peak for which Google Maps had no issues finding a route. The turnoff is rather nondescript and you have to go a little ways before encountering a sign indicating that there is public land at the end of the road. The road itself is a bit steep in places, but is otherwise in great shape. I encountered a lot more snow on this road than on Iron, likely because much of the road is on north facing slopes. Even with all the snow and mud, I had no real issues making it to the gate.
From the gate, it's a short walk up to the flattened summit covered in large communications towers. I ventured over the lookout, which maybe only has marginally better coastal views. I also tagged the wilderness highpoint because it was there. I saw someone else had gone north to Signal Peak, and figured I'd head over there too since the day was thus far pretty short.
The descent down to Stoten Opening is straightforward. I followed an old, partly overgrown jeep road. The meadow was surprisingly pretty, and it felt remote. Part of that may be due to running into some substantial bear tracks in the snow on the meadow's edge. The paws were a bit larger than my hands. The route up to Signal is cross country, but fortunately there is no undergrowth in the forest on the east side. The summit itself is worthless and there are only marginal views of the Cahto Ridge from a rock outcrop slightly to the south. I did run into more bear tracks just shy of the summit. I took a forest road back to my car that largely traverses the whole way.
