Ascent Trip ReportI was down from Box Spring Mountain about 1 PM, and braved the Friday afternoon traffic over to the Mt. Lukens TH where I arrived at about 2:50. Several signs warned about the gates closing 1 hour after sunset, and a quick check of the Peakbagger App told me that sunset on Mt. Lukens was 5:46 PM. Now worried about getting down in time, (especially if I was descending in darkness which would slow me down), I kept up a bit of an uncomfortable pace which I would pay for the next day with very sore knees.
I followed the Rim of the Valley trail on the way up, and it was nicely graded, easy to follow. I summitted at 4:50 in a biting cold wind, enjoyed the views to LA and the surrounding peaks for a moment, and started down towards the Cresenta View Trail. This was a bit steeper and rockier, but I still made it down by 6:20, and just barely avoided needing my headlamp. I was met by the guy waiting to close the gate, I was the last car in the lot. |
