Ascent Trip Report

We met at Bunny Flat on the evening of July 28 and spent the night in our cars. Started hiking at 8 AM on the 29th and reached Helen Lake a couple minutes after noon. The weather was warm and mostly clear throughout the climb. We hit snow a short distance above Horse Camp.

We slept a few hours at Helen Lake, and headed for the summit at 4:15 AM. Having been advised that the traverse around the right side of the Red Banks was out of condition (punched through), we selected a chute near the right end of the Banks and did not have much trouble getting through that section, as the snow was still firm. It had been an unusually heavy snow season, and the snow was said to be in better condition than usual for that time of year.

We reached the summit at 9:58, 5 hours and 43 minutes from the Lake. After spending a few minutes there, we headed down. The descent was uneventful except that the snow was collapsing in the Red Banks chute, with three-foot-deep holes down into a small, icy stream below. The few climbers bottlenecked here due to the slightly treacherous conditions. Below the Red Banks, we were able to glissade much of the way down to the campsite, due to the good snow condition there and the lack of rocks. The rest of the hike out was also uneventful, but pretty warm. I think we were back in town (Mount Shasta) by around 4 PM.
