Ascent Trip ReportI did 3 hikes today, this TR covers the first 2 hikes.
HUNTSVILLE STATE PARK HIGH POINT..... trail and bushwhack to 2 areas, 4.2 miles, 2 1/4 hours total.
The Park Headquarters is on Park Road 40 abt 1 1/4 mile southwest of Hwy I-45, exit 109 (just south of Huntsville). A beautiful tall pine forest with undergrowth. A good trail map is provided with the daily entry fee. As luck would have it, a trail goes right by the main HP.
The Park has 2 candidate high point areas with the same 580" closed contour - the main summit as shown by PB and another on the north side of Park Road 40, just 1/4 mile south of the Park's north boundary line. I went to both.
The Main summit a la PB.
The TH for this hike was 300 yds south of the Park Headquarters, at the Nature Center. I followed the well-marked Chinquapin Trail (orange) westbound 2 miles to a height-of-land at a "Mile Marker 2.0", 10 yds beyond is a green steel bench (30.62719,-95.54477).
The high ground is immediately to the west inside the extremely dense undergrowth. Impossible to pick "the" spot.
I found an animal path-of-sorts 30 yds before the "Mile Marker 2.0" as it heads west and besides some open pathways I was able to stomp the area to my satisfaction but with no guarantee for "the" HP.
I backtracked to my TH.
The 2nd Area.
We parked on Park Road 40, at the Litter Barrel Parking area, 1/4 mile inside the Park Boundary (as you drive in).
Again dense undergrowth. I fought my way north (less than 100 yds) inside the woods and chose a spot (30.63455,-95.51617).
BIG SLOUGH WILDERNESS HIGH POINT ... whack/road southeast bound , 1 mile, 35 minutes RT.
Part of the Davy Crockett National Forest.
From the State Park we found our way to Ratcliff, JCT 7/227, and continued north on 227 for 1 mile to a right turn on CR1165, 2.5 miles north turned right on CR1170, .6 miles northeast turned left onto CR1175 which we followed north for 1 mile and parked, this was my TH (30.45997,-95.12828). On the right is the Park Boundary (Wilderness sign on tree with pink tape marks the corner. An old broken fence is before the park.
The HP of the Park is due southeast .5 miles at the corner (where Park Boundary makes a 90 degree left (to the northeast).
I bushwacked southeast for first 200-300 yds along the old fence to a farm track that took me the rest of the way to the HP. The satellite imagery clearly shows this route.
We ended our day with a drive up to Mission Tejas State Park High Point on CR1580.
"IF HEARTACHES BROUGHT FAME IN LOVE'S CRAZY GAME,
I'D BE A LEGEND IN MY TIME.
IF THEY GAVE GOLD STATUETTES FOR TEARS AND REGRETS,
I'D BE A LEGEND IN MY TIME.
BUT THEY DON'T GIVE AWARDS AND THERE'S NO PRAISE OR FAME,
FOR HEARTS THAT ARE BROKEN FOR LOVE THAT'S IN VAIN." ...... johnny cash lyrics to "a legend in my time".
